What was once a cold and hard landscape with a feeling of a service alley is now a lush and light green avenue for pedestrians to enjoy.
The completed space features an array of green levels, starting with vibrant green EcoGabions on the upper and middle levels, a green screen climbing wall, finishing with a green wall at the base of the stairs.
As a first for Natural Habitats and New Zealand, eco gabions were installed to create a lavish green effect as 3-dimensional planting devices. In total, the site is home to 9 custom-built eco gabions that contain ideal lightweight growing media that support plant growth.
The site presented a variety of challenges for Natural Habitats due to the extremes of the various spaces. Eco gabion planting needed to be able to thrive in hot dry summers as well as cold damp winters while green wall plants live in a cool artificially lit space year-round. Plants were carefully selected for their environment with the palette including a variety of exotic specimen trees, ferns, shrubs, grasses and ground covers.
One of the key benefits of utilising this green technology is the ability to grow in the plants prior to installation. Not only does this give the plants time to take hold of their new habitat, but it also instantly creates a verdant feel at the time of installation.
