“Parklike” landscaping for new Burwood Hospital

“Parklike” landscaping for new Burwood Hospital

Burwood Hospital has long been recognised as one of New Zealand’s centres of excellence for rehabilitation and elective orthopaedic surgery. As of June 2016, it became much more with the opening of state-of-the-art facilities linked to the ‘old’ Burwood Hospital.

With the architecture and landscape designed by Jasmax, Natural Habitats was commissioned to complete all landscaping for the project including six interior courtyards, and landscaping around the main building and carpark.

The Burwood Hospital landscaping has contributed significantly to creating an environment at the Hospital that is therapeutic and restorative, says the Canterbury District Health Board.

“Patients and visitors to the hospital frequently comment on the parkland setting of the buildings, and staff are enjoying the native tree and shrub plantings that are encouraging bird life.”

“The landscaping within the secure and controlled courtyards enables staff to cater for specific user requirements according to the different needs of the units that open into them. Patients from both Adult Rehabilitation and the Older Persons’ Mental Health and stroke wards are benefitting greatly from the therapeutic and rehabilitative functions of the gardens.”
