Rangiriri Paa Restoration

23 September 2020

As well as being contracted to complete over $1 million of landscaping on the Rangiriri section of the Waikato Expressway, Natural Habitats was contracted to restore the culturally significant Rangiriri Paa.

The paa site was the key landmark in the 1863 Battle of Rangiriri, which was the first major engagement in the invasion of the Waikato, during the New Zealand Land Wars. It was severed by the construction of the then SH1 in the early 1960s.

Location: Waikato

Date Completed: 2020

Project Type:  Civil Infrastructure

The 4.8km Rangiriri section of the Waikato Expressway moved SH1 to the west, providing the opportunity to reinstate the historically important area.

Carved pou mark the full line of the battle trench to help tell the story of the site and its history. A car-parking area was also constructed to encourage people to spend time to explore the area’s history.

Natural Habitats completed the initial design by Boffa Miskell as well as undertaking construction.

Awards: For this project, Natural Habitats was proud to receive the following Landscapes of Distinction Awards:

  • BRONZE in Commercial Projects
