Green Roof tops newly crowned Alt & Reno Home of the Year 2023

We are thrilled to be the landscaping partner for the 2023 Alt & Reno Home of the Year.

On Thursday 30th March, Architects, homeowners and Interior Designers gathered together for HOME’s annual Home of the Year Awards. Now in their 28th Year, these awards celebrate homes that dare to be different, that push the boundaries, and that exemplify an innovative approach to residential architecture.

Of these notable homes, the home of the Remuera Rooftop Garden and Green Wall claimed the coveted 2023 Alt & Reno Home of the Year title.

This home is a 20-year labour of love and a symphony of natural, highly textural elements from timber to copper and concrete to green technology.

Natural Habitats was proud to design and build the crowning green roof and green wall, which were clever responses to design challenges.

The judges praised the street appeal created by the green roof and the attention to detail throughout the property.

“The street address of this house has been transformed by an elegant roof garden over a set down, concrete-walled garage and a sleek new front to the house... Alluring materials and clever planning means that the garage gives privacy to the bedrooms, allowing a glass wall to open onto the planted green wall of the garage.”

Architect Vlad Cekus of BVA Studio required the green wall and green roof to be integral parts of the house design.

“A selection of plants appropriate for the roof, consideration of the roof structure, season, microclimate, orientation, the sun and the shades as well as street appearance were successfully communicated between the architect and Natural Habitats. The green wall, visible from the master bedroom large window, is simply a piece of art that every owner would like to have in their own house.”

Natural Habitats uses the lightest-weight green roof and green roof system in New Zealand which meant the structure did not require extensive engineering to manage additional weight.

Tom McCarthy, Auckland Regional Manager explains “our system is one of a kind in New Zealand. It’s ultra lightweight and can be established in our nursery prior to installation for an instant ‘green’ effect making it perfect in the residential environment.”

On winning the prestigious title, the client was delighted with the outcome.

“We are thrilled with the green wall and green roof Natural Habitats created. Our design challenges needed creative, yet practical solutions and the green roof and green wall are exactly that. The green roof worked within our structural requirements and the green wall has transformed our bedroom view as a living piece of art.”
