Why Choose Natural Habitats Green Roofs?

We have been designing, building and maintaining green roofs since 1996, when we created New Zealand's first green roof for Quay West Apartments.

Since then, we have developed our green roof system to be extremely easy to install, easier to maintain than a traditional garden and the lightest-weight green roof system on the New Zealand market.

Our green roofs have proven themselves for numerous industry-leading projects from the Auckland City Library green roof, through to bespoke residential projects.

What are the benefits of green roofs?

Increases property value
Extends the lifespan of a roof
Reduces energy consumption
Improves air quality
Improves storm water management
Increases biodiversity

What are Natural Habitats green roofs made of?

Our green roofs are made from our ultra-lightweight eco-pillow system

Pre-planted eco-pillow

Eco-pillows are rectangular blocks of ultra-lightweight growing media encased within specific layers of geotextile fabrics.

Each eco-pillow measures 1000 x 500 x 150 mm.

Planted eco-pillow

Eco-pillows are planted in our green house where plants can establish themselves before the installation of the green roof.

They fit together like puzzle pieces to form green roofs of any size.

Plants continue to establish themselves on the roof, growing to become one monolithic mass.

Regular garden maintenance ensures the green roof looks its best year-round.

Why use eco-pillows to make green roofs?

Ultra-lightweight
Minimal to no structural engineering required
Create an instant impression
Easy maintenance
Suitable for any size roof
A tidy property
Recycles waste

Sustainability

Environmental solutions for a better world

The growing media we use on green roofs, green walls and eco-gabions contains over 80% polystyrene, which we collect from the city's waste stream.

Adding more planting area to your property means more plants working to sequester carbon and more biodiversity for flora and fauna to thrive.

Green roofs also reduce a building's demand for heating and cooling, therefore reducing demand on our precious resources

Green roofs stop up to 70% of rainfall entering sewer systems, negating run-off issues and helping to improve our natural environment.

Green roofs count towards Green Star and Home Star ratings, which are national ratings that encourage sustainable building and healthy homes.
