The complete remodelling of this stately Auckland home, called for a grand garden design that reinforced the magnificence of the house. The original driveway/motor court and expanse of uninspiring lawn did not meet the owner’s expectations for their garden.

Natural Habitats senior landscape designer Mark Read was brought on board to bring to life the owner’s vision for a serene, structured garden.The completed garden achieves a compelling balance between drama and restraint.

Throughout the design process Mark was mindful of the need to create a garden that was easy to maintain while still being user friendly and inviting. It is this simple design response with layered planting and strong hard landscape components that achieves a unified design appropriate to the intricate house design and local surrounds.

The real test of the garden’s success is of course by the owners, who comment that they “really do use all of the garden; it works perfectly as an outdoor living room”, giving new meaning to the term the great outdoors.
