Stonefields Reserves

Design-Build-Care
Mount Wellington, Auckland

  • Design and detailing of streetscape, 11 neighbourhood parks and neighbourhood centre development.
  • Build & care of Cliff Face Park including hard and soft works and stonework.

Stonefields is unique site of cultural and archaeological significance. This area was home to one of the largest Maori settlements in Aotearoa. As Auckland’s largest master planned community, Stonefields encompasses a new urban village, consisting of a town centre, primary school, public parks and a diverse range of housing.

Each of the reserves at Stonefield’s serve the diverse open space needs of the community and provide for a range of activities and experiences. The design intent of these parks is to build upon these characteristics through interweaving design details, materials, and vegetation types that links to the wetland, maximizes the site’s external orientations and visual opportunities as well as providing unique experiences for the parks users. The reserves also introduce fruiting trees which add a productive element to the landscape.

Ecology has been used as key design language, and in each of the reserves ecological context has determined a site specific palette of vegetation types.

From a holistic perspective the large scale landscaping of this public space has helped anchor the newly founded community. It creates a recognizably volcanic identity, which celebrates and embodies the natural and cultural heritage of the site and the wider Auckland area.
