Maungarei Springs Wetland

Design-Build-Care

Mount Wellington, Auckland

  • Landscape construction involved both hard and soft components, including 200m of board walk
  • Sustainability was a design imperative at Maungeri Springs, the site’s development provided a unique opportunity to restore indigenous lava flow ecosystems through ecological corridors and biological diversity

This 4ha wetland/storm water reserve reserve also caters for the community’s needs by acting as a gathering space and by providing the amenity of aesthetically appealing views of water and native planting, walking tracks, boardwalks, look outs, various seating areas and visual insight into the ecological and historical character of the site.

In addition to recreational benefits, Stonefields Wetland also provides important storm water functions for the 160ha catchment which drains into it. Using best practice storm water techniques, this wetland system collects controls and attenuates storm water runoff from the Stonefields development.

The wetland pond’s also play an important role locally and in the wider context of Tamaki Ecological district by supporting a moderate to high diversity of native and endemic water birds and the native Willowherb Pilobium hirigerum, which was thought to be extinct.
